About Five Element Acupuncture

Classical or Constitutional Five Element Acupuncture is an ancient style of Acupuncture rooted in the Han dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD) classics of Chinese medicine. Some people believe it is the style that in some ways most closely adheres to the values and priorities expressed in the Nei Jing and other classics of that time.

In many ways Five Element Constitutional Acupuncture is very different to the Modern TCM and Japanese styles of Acupuncture.

The diagnosis and treatment of a person's constitutional element lies at the heart of this style of acupuncture. Chapter 64 of the Ling Shu sets out the concept of the Five Element types. What is striking is how treatment focused on the Constitutional Element has the ability to initiate extraordinary changes in a person's health and sense of well-being.

As the Constitutional Element is the primary imbalance, change is commonly initiated in other organs and elements not treated directly. This is due to the relationships between the elements expressed in the sheng and ke cycles.

There are many other differences from other styles of Acupuncture such as a reliance on the ancient names or Spirits of the Points.  It is believed that by using intention different points can affect a persons spirit in different way according to the ancient names that have been long since disregarded by other styles of acupuncture.

Blocks to treatment are emphasised such as the shamanistic idea of Possession and more superficial blocks such as Entry / Exit blocks, Husband Wife and Aggressive Energy.

These and other concepts too numerous to cite here combine to make this style of acupuncture a fascinating addition to the cannon of Traditional Chinese Medicine and an incredible asset to the practitioner wanting to treat in contemporary western society
