Introduction Ever since the Emperor Fu Xi wrote the Yi Jing in around 3000 BC the idea of the Five Elements has been an intrinsic part of Chinese Medicine. These 5 Elements govern the rhythms of change in nature, in the universe and in ourselves. Though Five Element Acupuncture has primarily been an oral tradition, it has always aimed to touch people at the levels of body, emotion and spirit. At the heart of this tradition lies the understanding that each of us has a particular association with one of these elements. This one element helping create who we are, how we act and the gifts we bring to the world. In this workshop we will explore how we see these 5 elemental energies in our patients and ourselves. We will look to nature and see the creation of the seasons; The Wood Element with it's hope of the new in Spring, Fire and the activity and relationships of Summer, Earth and the fullness of harvest in Late Summer. Metal; Autumn's shedding of what it no longer needs and Water; the quite time of Winter's hibernation. For a moment we will leave the path of the 8 principles to look at our patients afresh. To look at our patients as a whole, looking for signs not symptoms, learning to touch people at the level their constitutional element and thus supporting them to grow and change. Learning how to empower them to be all they can be. |
